Papilio machaon, also called Swallowtail or Schwalbenschwanz is a great butterfly from the Palaearctic ecozone (Europe). The first description was in 1758 by Linnaeus. With a wingspan of 6.5 – 7.5 cm the Swallowtail is one of the largest butterflies from Europe. It is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The butterfly is yellow and black. Hind wings have tails. Papilio machaon has one of the largest distribution of PAPILINIDAE. In Holarctic (North Africa, Europe and Asia) it is distributed.

The genus PAPILIO contain about 200 species and it is the biggest group of PAPILIONIDAE. PAPILIO butterflies (Swallowtails) lives on each continent without Antarctic. The biggest biodiversity is in tropical areas. Feedplants are members of family LAURACEAE, RUTACEAE and UMBELLIFERAE.

This genus contain about 70 species and it is a big group of NYMPHALIDAE. MORPHO butterflies are from South America (NEOTROPIC). This butterflies have flouresce blue on there wings. This optical phenominon based on refraction and interference.

This genus contain about 180 species and it is a very big group of NYMPHALIDAE. CHARAXES butterflies are normaly from Africa, but one species (Charaxes jasius Linnaeus 1767; Two-tailed Pasha) life also in south of Europe. Species are closely related with POLYURA butterflies.
